QUESTION:  What is the value of testing done by technicians before the doctor examines your eyes?  My last doctor did not do screenings and I never had a problem?
ANSWER:   In our office, we spend a majority of our budget to buy the best  technology each year, because the testing done before you see me is so important! An Optometrist basically tries to resolve your complaints via testing and prescription but what about prevention? Not only can eye health problems be prevented (in many cases) but general health problems like hardening of the arteries,  may be diagnosed first in your eye test! Children who do not achieve well in school and yet are quite bright may fail because of problems with eye teaming but not sharpness of vision (and so not complain about their eye sight). This is what screening (pre-testing) attempts to address. Without the wonderful information that my technicians gather before I see you,  I would basically rely upon your complaints and my observations in your care.  With the screening,  I can often show you problems you did not even know you had and prevent them from becoming severe. A hospital administrator once commented on the fact that we had better technology than his NYC hospital. We are very proud of his observation.  Now you know why!
