Cataracts

  What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts are a loss of clarity of the natural lens within the eye.  In today's American population,  detectable changes begin frequently in 40's age group!  This is NOT natural and should not be presumed to be normal. Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in America, though they can be 'corrected' via surgery.  Cataracts can be prevented and may be reversible via changes in lifestyle, nutrition and supplementation.

Symptoms:

Causes:

  1. Free radicals cause most cataracts. These highly reactive chemicals cause our body to age prematurely, much as a car rusts. As the lens oxidizes it becomes harder and loses its ability to change focus.
  2. Sunlight - ultraviolet light (UV) which is one of the shortest light frequencies accelerates free-radical damage to the lens. The effects of UV light increase with time much as excessive sun exposure may promote skin cancer..
  3. Toxic Medications,  including steroids, cholesterol lowering drugs, gout medications, antibiotics, blood pressure medications and some diuretics.
  4. Allergies to foods, can congest the sinuses, causing poor circulation and congestion in the eyes and surrounding tissues.
  5. Poor nutrition and digestion. Nutritional deficiencies and poor digestion greatly increase the incidence of cataracts.
  6. Smoking - produces a narrowing of the retina blood vessels causing premature tissue aging and disease.
  7. Aging - normal aging results in lens hardening.
  8. Diabetes  - Diabetics develop cataracts at an earlier age than the average population.
  9. Heredity - genetic predisposition
  10. Alcoholic Beverages - the regular use of alcoholic beverages may increase the risk of cataracts.

Drugs that may cause cataracts:

Conventional Treatment:

Surgery is the most common treatment for removing cataracts.  A plastic replacement for the natural lens is placed into the eye after the opaque natural lens (cataract) is removed. After surgery, eye drops are used to prevent infection and reduce inflammation. .

These lubricants provide a synergistic effect in protecting against "dry eyes" and other forms of eye irritation. Additionally, Brite Eyes II™ contains 1% N-Acetyl L-Carnosine, which acts as a time-release version of L-Carnosine. This helps in protecting the lipid tissues of the eye from light damage. Brite Eyes II™ also contains the important antioxidants Vitamin A and Vitamin E. Many references show the importance of these vitamins in helping the aging eye. Recommended dosage is to apply 1 to 2 drops in each eye every day.

Critical: Alpha Lipoic Acid is the only antioxidant that is both fat- and water-soluble.
Lipoic Acid helps to prevent Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) (due to the Antioxidant properties of Lipoic Acid; Lipoic Acid can penetrate eye tissue and protect both the Lens and the Retina from degeneration). Recommended dosage is 300mg per day.
Critical: Selenium  tablets is one of the precursors to Glutathione. Recommended dosage is 1 tablet per day (150 - 200 mcg per day).
